1-16 IN Soldiers Join Bulgarian Community for National Clean-Up Campaign

From Greg Butler - Chaplain with the Armed Forces.

KOTEL, Bulgaria- Twenty Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, deployed to Novo Selo Training Area, joined the Municipality of Kotel and local residents Sept. 20, 2025, in support of Bulgaria’s national volunteer initiative “Let’s Clean Bulgaria Together.”

Now in its 14th year, the campaign- organized by bTV- mobilizes citizens, municipalities, and organizations across the country to improve public spaces. In Kotel, U.S. Soldiers, led by Chaplain Gregory Butler and local volunteers worked side by side to clean and restore the town’s “Izvorite” park.

“This was a great way to connect with the community, give back, and show respect for the environment we share,” SPC. Angelo Mendez said. “Leadership isn’t just about missions- it’s about making a positive impact wherever you are.” SSG Richard Finnefrock

Soldiers highlighted how community efforts strengthen partnerships with their Bulgarian hosts. “We’re not just stationed here for training- we’re part of the community. Working together builds trust and shows our shared commitment to making life better for everyone.” Maj Douglas McFarland

For both Soldiers and locals, the results were clear: a cleaner park, stronger relationships, and a renewed spirit of cooperation.
